Publishing assets from a project into a catalog
You can publish various types of assets from a project into a catalog.
For the list of asset types that you can publish to a catalog, see Asset types and properties.
Requirements
You can publish assets from a project to a catalog if these requirements are met:
-
You have the Admin or Editor role in both the project and the catalog.
-
Both the project and the catalog must be created by members of the same IBM Cloud account, or, if your company set up SAML federation on IBM Cloud, employees of the same company.
-
The asset does not originate from another catalog and have any masked columns. You can't publish a data asset that originated in a governed catalog and that has masked columns to another catalog.
Publishing does not require the restricted collaborators setting on the project.
Publishing assets
To discover and publish multiple data assets from a specific data source, use a metadata import asset.
To publish one or more of any type of asset from a project to a catalog:
-
Select assets you want to publish to the catalog:
-
From the project’s Assets page, click an asset type.
-
Select all or specific assets from the list
-
Click Publish to catalog.
-
-
Choose the catalog and fill in the asset properties. If any of the assets require a connection, those connections are listed and will be added to the catalog as connection assets, including connections to IBM Cloud Object Storage for uploaded files. If you don't want to publish a connection, you can remove it. All assets that require the removed connection are removed from the list of assets to publish.
-
If duplicate assets exist in the catalog, select a duplicate handling method:
- To add new property values to the assets in the catalog, select Update.
- To remove all existing property values from the catalog assets and replace them with new values, select Overwrite.
- To create new assets, select Add duplicate. This option is available only if the catalog Duplicate asset handling setting is set to Allow duplicates.
- To keep the original catalog assets, select Preserve. Find out more about specifying duplicate asset handling in Handling duplicate assets in catalogs.
-
Select the appropriate privacy level for your asset. To learn more about the privacy setting, see Controlling access to an asset in a catalog.
-
Click Publish. The assets are added to the catalog and you are the owner of them.
If you publish assets from a project in one account to a catalog in another account, profiles of structured data assets are not copied because the set of available data classes might be different. If you publish a structured data asset to a governed catalog, a new profile is created automatically. If you publish a structured data asset to an ungoverned catalog, you must manually create a new profile.
After an asset appears on the catalog Browse page, click its name to view and update it.
If data protection rules are enforced for the catalog, the preview for a data asset is unavailable until the asset is evaluated.
