Upgrading your IBM Cloud service plans

When you’re ready to upgrade your Watson Studio, Watson Knowledge Catalog, or Watson Machine Learning service, or any of the services that you can use with Watson Studio, you can upgrade in place without losing any of your work or data.

You can upgrade any service independently. For example, Watson Studio Enterprise does not require a Standard plan of IBM Cloud Object Storage. However, to upgrade to a paid service plan, your IBM Cloud account must be upgraded from a Lite account to a paid plan.

You must be the owner or administrator of the IBM Cloud account for a service to upgrade it. Otherwise, you can find your account administrators on your Identity & Access page in IBM Cloud.

Upgrading your IBM Cloud account

You must upgrade your IBM Cloud account from a Lite plan to a paid plan before you can upgrade any service plan.

You have these choices for upgrading your IBM Cloud account:

  • Cloud Pak for Data as a Service subscription: You commit to a minimum spending amount for a certain period of time and receive a discount on the overall cost.
  • Pay-As-You-Go: You pay only for billable services that you use, with no long-term contracts or commitments.

For more information on these options, see Account types.

Upgrading a core service

You can upgrade your Watson Studio, Watson Knowledge Catalog, or Watson Machine Learning service if you are the owner or administrator of the IBM Cloud account from which the service was provisioned.

If you’re working in a project or catalog and run out of compute resources, you see a message that tells you to upgrade to get more capacity unit hours (CUH). You can replenish compute resources for that project or catalog by upgrading only if you created the project or catalog. If you’re not sure, go to the Your projects or Your catalogs page and to see the name of the creator.

To upgrade Watson Studio, Watson Knowledge Catalog, or Watson Machine Learning:

  1. If necessary, upgrade your IBM Cloud account.
  2. While logged in to Cloud Pak for Data as a Service, click Upgrade in the banner.
  3. On the Services page of your Settings, click Upgrade for the service you want to upgrade. If the service’s card says No permission instead of having an Upgrade button, ask your IBM Cloud account owner for help.

After the upgrade, the additional features and capacity for the new plan are automatically available.
