Upgrade your Watson apps or IBM Cloud service plans

When you're ready to upgrade your Watson Studio, Watson Knowledge Catalog, or Watson Machine Learning app, or any of the services that you can use with Watson Studio, you can upgrade in place without losing any of your work or data.

You can upgrade any Watson app or associated IBM Cloud service independently. For example, Watson Studio Enterprise does not require a Standard plan of IBM Cloud Object Storage. However, to upgrade to a paid service plan, you must upgrade your IBM Cloud account to Pay-As-You-Go.

You must be the owner or administrator of the IBM Cloud account for a service to upgrade it.

Upgrade a Watson app

You can upgrade your Watson Studio, Watson Knowledge Catalog, or Watson Machine Learning app if you are the owner or administrator of the IBM Cloud account from which the app was provisioned.

If you're working in a project or catalog and run out of capacity unit hour (CUH) processing resources, you'll see a message telling you to upgrade to get more CUH. You can replenish CUH for that project or catalog by upgrading only if you created the project or catalog. If you're not sure, go to the My projects or Your catalogs page and to see the name of the creator.

To upgrade Watson Studio, Watson Knowledge Catalog, or Watson Machine Learning:

  1. While logged in to Watson Studio or Watson Knowledge Catalog, click the Upgrade button.
  2. On the Apps page of your Settings, click Upgrade for the app you want to upgrade. If the app's card says No permission instead of having an Upgrade button, ask your IBM Cloud account owner for help.
  3. Log in to your IBM Cloud account, choose the plan you want, and click Save.
  4. If prompted, upgrade your IBM Cloud account to Pay-As-You-Go and enter your billing information.

After the upgrade, the additional features and capacity for the new plan are automatically available.

Upgrade an older Watson Studio app

If you are the IBM Cloud account owner or administrator for the Watson Studio app but you can't see the Watson Studio app on your profile Settings page, you must provision a new instance of Watson Studio to upgrade. To upgrade an older Watson Studio app:

  1. Go to the Watson Studio plan page and provision a new instance of a Watson Studio Standard or Enterprise plan.
  2. If prompted, upgrade your IBM Cloud account. Your Watson Studio app is upgraded and you can see the app on your profile Settings page.

Update an older Watson Knowledge Catalog app

If you get an error when you try to upgrade a Watson Knowledge Catalog app, you must delete your current Watson Knowledge Catalog service and provision a new Watson Knowledge Catalog service with the Standard plan. To upgrade an older Watson Knowledge Catalog app:
  3. On your Watson Knowledge Catalog service Manage page in IBM Cloud, click the Action menu and then Delete service.
  4. Go to the the Watson Knowledge Catalog plan page and provision a new instance of a Watson Knowledge Catalog Standard or Professional plan.

Upgrade a service that you use in Watson Studio

To upgrade a service from Watson Studio:

  1. While logged in to Watson Studio, click Services and then one of the service categories: Watson Services, Data Services, or Compute Services.
  2. Click the MANAGE menu next to the service and choose Manage in IBM Cloud.
  3. In IBM Cloud, click Plan to go to the Plan page, choose the plan you want, and click Save.
  4. If prompted, upgrade your IBM Cloud account to Pay-As-You-Go and enter your billing information.
