Get started with streams flow

You can design a new streams flow on a easy-to-use canvas in IBM Watson Studio. By using examples that are ready for immediate use, a wizard, or sample data that we provide, your streams flow can be running in a matter of minutes. The streams flow is deployed to the industry-leading IBM Streaming Analytics service, which offers best-in-class analytics and optimization. You can curate, analyze, and act on massive amounts of changing data in real time. Regardless of whether the data is structured or unstructured, you can leverage data at scale to drive real-time analytics for up-to-the-minute business decisions.

You must have the following provisioned services:

  • Streaming Analytics instance

  • Cloud Object Storage instance

Watch this video to see how to provision the services necessary to create, edit, and run a streams flow.

This video will demonstrate how to provision the prerequisite IBM Cloud services.

To get started with a streams flow, do the following steps:

  1. Create a streams flow in a project that uses Cloud Object Storage. Use any of the following methods:

    a. Use example streams flow – Select a ready-to-use streams flow to get you started immediately. No configuration is needed.

This method is the best way to get started with streams flow. Select a pre-defined example to learn how to construct a streams flow. You can be up and running immediately.

    b. Use a wizard – In three simple steps you can design a basic streams flow.

This method is the easiest way to get a simple streams flow up and running.

    c. Import a streams flow file – Import a streams flow file that was downloaded from a different project.

This method is best if you want to use a streams flow from a different project without having to re-create it in your project.

    d. Manually – With our simple canvas, use the visual drag-and-drop of operators to design a complex streams flow.

Regardless of the method you use to create a streams flow, you can use existing connections to access data sources and targets, or you can create a connection. These connections are shared within the same project.

  2. Use existing connections to access data sources and targets, or create a connection. These connections are shared within the same project.

  3. In the File path field, select a bucket from your Cloud Object Storage.

  4. If needed, edit the streams flow to easily change a streams flow design to get the information that you need.

  5. Run the streams flow.

Use the Metrics page to get information about the general health of your streams flow, real-time metrics, runtime views, and embedded logging and error notification.
