You can use the Data Replication service to integrate and synchronize data across multiple data stores. You can replicate data between both homogenous and heterogenous data stores.
Tech preview This is a technology preview and is not yet supported for use in production environments.
Overview
You can use the Data Replication service to deliver, improve and, react to database changes in real-time. Data Replication gives you access to continuously available and up-to-date data.
For example, your organization's core data might be stored on IBM® Db2 on Cloud and might need to be accessed by users across multiple departments and locations in real-time. By using Data Replication, you can make this business-critical data available to distributed targets such as Oracle or PostgreSQL.
Getting started with Data Replication
You can add Data Replication as an asset in a project. After you create a Data Replication asset that connects a source and target data store, you need to run a replication job that uses the replication asset configuration on a Data Replication service instance. The data is replicated continuously.
For information on how to create a replication asset and run a replication job, see Running replication jobs.
- Required service
- Data Replication. You must create and deploy a service instance of Data Replication in Cloud Pak for Data as a Service to replicate your data. For more information, see Creating and managing IBM Cloud services.
- Required permissions
- Your role determines which data replication tasks you can perform:
- To create, run, and, stop a replication, you must have Editor or Admin role access to the project. Replications are run on replication service instances. You must have access to the replication service instance where you want to run the replication job. Contact the Cluster Administrator to get access to service instances.
- To monitor a replication, you must have Viewer role access to the project at a minimum.
- Data formats
- Data Replication works with connections to and from select types of data sources and formats. For more information, see Supported Data Replication connections.
- Credentials
- Data Replication uses your IBM Cloud credentials to connect to the service.
The following image shows details of a Data Replication asset running in a project between two heterogenous source and target data stores including an event log that captures information about the progress and status of the replication.

- You can monitor your Data Replication service instances and Data Replication assets associated with an instance. For more information, see Monitoring replication assets.
- You can pause, resume, or, stop running your replication job at any time. For more information, see Managing replication assets.
