Governance artifacts (legacy)

This information describes the legacy behavior for governance artifacts. See Moving to the new version of governance artifacts.

You use the governance artifacts in Watson Knowledge Catalog to characterize the content of data in governed catalogs and control access to data based on the content.

You use these governance artifacts to enrich and control your data:

  • Classifications: Each data asset has a classification that describes the sensitivity of the data. Classifications are provided by Watson Knowledge Catalog. Catalog collaborators assign the classification when they add data assets to a governed catalog.

  • Data classes: For relational data sets, one data class is assigned to each column during profiling. Data classes are provided by Watson Knowledge Catalog or can be shared from Information Governance Catalog. Catalog collaborators can change the data class assigned to a column.

  • Business terms: You create business terms in the Business Glossary tool to define business concepts in a standard way for your enterprise. Business terms can also be shared from Information Governance Catalog. Catalog collaborators can assign one or more terms to data assets and columns within relational data sets to describe the data.

  • Policies and rules: You control access to data by creating policies and rules in the Policy Manager tool. Within rules, you can include classifications, data classes, business terms, or tags to identify the data to control.

Catalog collaborators can also create and assign tags to assets and columns in relational data sets. However, tags are not governance artifacts. Tags are created by individual collaborators, are allowed in ungoverned catalogs, and are not regulated.

You can view statistics about sensitive data, policies, and policy enforcement in the Data Dashboard.

This diagram shows how the policies, rules, and business terms work together with predefined data classes to describe and control data.

This image shows policy tools.

Policy tools are scoped to Watson Knowledge Catalog catalogs in the same IBM Cloud account.

You must have the Admin role for the Watson Knowledge Catalog service to create policies, create business terms, and view the Data Dashboard. Otherwise, you can only view policies and business terms.

Some Watson Knowledge Catalog plans have limits on the number of rules and business terms that you can create.
