Add connections to legacy projects

You need to create a connection to a data source before you can load data to or from it. You have a legacy project if the object storage listed on the Settings page is Object Storage (Swift). Otherwise, you have a IBM Watson project and need to create connections with a different method.

You create connections to these types of data sources in legacy projects:

  • IBM Cloud services
  • External cloud services
  • External on-premises databases

To create a new connection:

  1. From your project's Assets page, click the Find and add data icon.
  2. On the Connections pane, click Create Connection.
  3. Enter a name and description and choose a Service Category:
    • Data Service = IBM Cloud data service
    • External = A cloud service from another company or an on-premises database
  4. Choose the service or database server from the list.
  5. Enter the connection information:
  6. Click Create. The connection is available to all legacy projects.
  7. On the Connections pane, select the connection and click Apply.

To add an existing connection to a legacy project:

  1. From your project's Assets page, click the Find and add data icon.
  2. On the Connections pane, select the connection and click Apply.

IBM Cloud data services

When you choose Data Service, your existing IBM Cloud data services appear in the Service Instance list.

Other cloud services

After you choose External and the cloud service name from the list of external services, you supply the connection information specific to the service. Typically, you need to provide information like the host, port number, user name, and password.

External on-premises databases

After you choose External and the database server name from the list of external services, you supply the connection information:

  1. Fill in the connection fields for the database server. Typically, you need to provide information like the host, port number, user name, and password.
  2. Click the Service is On Premises box.
  3. Choose the secure gateway for your database server. If you don't have an existing secure gateway, configure one:

    1. Click Deploy Secure Gateway and then Buy Secure Gateway. The IBM Cloud Secure Gateway service provides a remote client to create a secure connection.
    2. Go to your profile settings. On the Services page, find the Secure Gateway service and choose Manage in IBM Cloud from the MANAGE menu.
    3. On the Secure Gateway Dashboard, add a gateway.
    4. Click the gateway and add a client. You can download a client program or copy the provided Docker command.
    5. On your client computer, configure the client program or run the Docker command.
    6. Go back to the New Connection page in Watson Knowledge Catalog and select the secure gateway that you just created.
