Scaling your service in Data Virtualization

Scaling your Data Virtualization service

You can scale your service to one of three sizes: small, medium, and large.

Before you begin

Required role: To complete this task, you must be a Manager. You can scale a service at any time after it is provisioned. For more information, see Data Virtualization roles.

About this task

Scaling a service changes its capacity by changing the number of replicas. For example, when you deploy a service on IBM Cloud Pak® for Data as a Service, the service is typically provisioned with a single replica. You can also scale the virtual central processing units (vCPU) and memory that you want to use. Your current usage appears in the Scaling settings summary on the Scaling settings page.

Procedure

  1. On the navigation menu, click Data > Data virtualization.
    The service menu opens to the Data sources page by default.
  2. On the service menu, click Service settings > Scaling settings.
  3. Adjust the Worker nodes.
    You can adjust the slider from 3 (minimum) to 9 (maximum).
    Note: Head nodes have 8 vCPU and 32 GB RAM per node. 4 vCPUs per head node are allocated to service management and monitoring, and are not included in the current usage charge. Worker nodes have 4 vCPU and 32 GB RAM per node.
  4. Verify the cost of your scaling changes in the Scaling settings summary and click Save.
    Billable resources are calculated as 4 cores per head node plus 4 cores per worker node.
  5. Confirm your scaling changes and click Confirm.
    You must wait until the scaling completes before you can change the settings again.

What to do next

  • Wait for a notification that scaling was successful. You can continue to work in Data Virtualization while you wait. If you are notified that scaling failed, contact IBM® Support.
  • To view scaling history, click Service settings > Scaling history on the service menu.
