Watson™ Knowledge
Catalog includes a connection
type that is specific to Data Virtualization.
Before you begin
You must enable personal credentials for this step. Navigate to

About this task
You can create a connection to Data Virtualization in Watson Knowledge
Catalog manually. To do so, you must use the
Data Virtualization
connection type.
Procedure
To manually create a Data Virtualization
connection in a catalog:
- Click .
- Select your catalog and click .
- Select the Data Virtualization connection type.
- Enter the connection information required for your service.
Typically, you
need to provide information like the database, host, port number, service instance ID, username, and
password. You can find the service instance ID in the Connection configuration
resources section on the page. Optionally, to create a secure connection:
- Check the Port is SSL-enabled box and specify
the port number in the Connection Information page.
- Enter your credentials as an API key or a user name and password.
Restriction:
To avoid double masking when you use preview in Watson services, access control in Data Virtualization is not applied when you preview a data asset
(table or view) that comes from Data Virtualization. This
happens only when data masking applies to the preview in Watson services.
The preview is subject to the data protection rules and catalog or project access control
only.
This means that even though a user does not have access to query an object from Data Virtualization, they might still be able to preview it in a
catalog or project if they have access to that catalog or project as well as the data asset.
Tech preview This is a
technology preview and is not supported for use in production environments.
- Click Create.
The connection appears on the
Assets page. To edit the connection:
- Click the connection name on the Assets page.
- Click the Assets tab.
- Click Edit the connection in the preview.
The Watson Knowledge
Catalog service uses the
DV_SYSID
functional role to connect to Data Virtualization. The DV_SYSID
role is defined
automatically in Data Virtualization and is required for
profiling virtual assets. This role is intended for internal service use only, you must not use this
role for any other purposes.
